SoMa Neighborhood, San Francisco
Once home to warehouses and industry, the South of Market (SoMa) district has become one of San Francisco’s hottest centers for art, nightlife, and contemporary living. As the name implies, this District 9 neighborhood lies south of Market Street and runs east to west between The Embarcadero and Eleventh Street.
The spirit of SoMa can be found in its industrial past. Originally developed with warehouses in mind, city blocks in SoMa tend to be larger than is typical in San Francisco. The old warehouses have been converted into chic residential and live-work lofts that help the area retain its character. Traditionally blue-collar, South of Market has set out on a gentrification path and appeals to young professionals who appreciate the hip vibe of the neighborhood and easy access to downtown by foot or public transportation.
Although the southwestern end of SoMa tends to be a bit sketchy, the area closer to the downtown Financial District is a cultural hub with museums and galleries, while swanky nightclubs, restaurants, bars, and cafes provide the upscale contemporary San Francisco lifestyle enjoyed by many young urban professionals.
