San Francisco Modern + Mid-Century Modern Homes
San Francisco is home to some of the most eclectic and interesting architecture to be found on the West Coast. From the Spanish Colonial design of the city’s oldest building, Mission Dolores, to the sleek glass condominium towers of The Infinity, architectural style in San Francisco spans centuries and sensibilities – offering a home for every taste and most pocketbooks.
By reputation San Francisco is the Grand Dame of Victorian style, but real estate in the city comes in all shapes and sizes, ranging from turn-of-the-century Edwardians and Spanish style mansions of the Richmond/Sea Cliff area to St. Francis Woods’ elegant residential parks, and on to the quaint single-family homes on the city streets of North Beach. For the modernist, perhaps best of all are the mid-century modern and contemporary buildings found scattered throughout San Francisco.

Mid-Century & Mid-Century Modern
San Francisco is a veritable who’s who of early / mid-century modern and modernist architects and builders.
Bernard Maybeck, Richard Neutra, Henry Hill, Francis Joseph McCarthy, William Wurster, Julia Morgan, Mario Ciampi, Gardner Dailey, Ernest Born, and Joseph Esherick are influential architects whose work can be found in San Francisco. Influential San Francisco architect Timothy Pflueger designed several homes in the Sherwood Forest area. Henry Doelger (of the 1962 song “Little Boxes” fame) is well represented in the Sunset District; Oliver Rousseau’s charming ‘30’s Period Revival homes can be found along 33rd Street in District 2, and Joseph Eichler built an entire subdivision in Diamond Heights with the help of noted architect Claude Oakland.
Modern Day Masters
In addition to San Francisco’s rich heritage of mid-century architecture, some of today’s most progressive and respected architects have made their mark on San Francisco’s cityscape.
Throughout the city, you can find amazing examples of modern, 21st century residential architecture by respected architects and architectural firms including House+House, Aidlin Darling Design, Levy Art + Architecture, Craig Steely / Steely Architecture, Jim Jennings, Heydar Ghiai & Sons, Stanley Saitowitz | Natoma Architects, LDA Architects, John Maniscalo Architecture, Lundberg Design, Phil Mathews, Chris McMahon, and James Shay.
Modern Lofts & Condos in San Francisco
If condo living is more your style, most San Francisco neighborhoods feature at least a few hip lofts and fashionable condominiums. Many lofts in SoMa and the Central Waterfront area feature an industrial edge. Condos in the Hayes Valley and Mission Bay are cool and trendy, and for buyers fortunate enough to have a large budget, several luxurious residential high-rises, including Millennium Tower, One Rincon Hill, and The Infinity are currently being built in the South Beach area.
