District 2 San Francisco
Located in central west San Francisco, District 2 is more commonly recognized as the Sunset District. Originally called "The Outside Lands", the Sunset began as sand dunes, scrub, sand, and more sand. Early homes were actually old streetcars that had been pieced together to make homes. Recognizing the opportunity to capitalize on cheap land, real estate entrepreneurs moved in and created the seven neighborhoods we see today; Inner Sunset, Central Sunset, Outer Sunset, Parkside, Inner Parkside, Outer Parkside, and Golden Gate Heights.
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Golden Gate Park on the north, the Sunset District has the feel of a small town within a city. The Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods are family oriented and have a community feeling with modest single-family homes, good schools, and many family-owned businesses. Golden Gate Heights, which rises above the flats, is a little more sophisticated and characterized by sweeping views, winding streets, and upscale homes.
The Sunset District is a conservative (at least by San Francisco standards) laid-back community, with great restaurants and lots of mom & pop style shops. Commuting to downtown is easy, thanks to San Francisco's extensive public transportation system. Homes are modest, but have interesting pedigrees; in addition to Victorian and Edwardian style homes, the Sunset is full of early mid-century architecture by developers such as Henry Doelger, Ray Galli, and Oliver Rousseau.

The Sunset Area is primarily a single-family residential area with lots of interesting architecture. Homes in Golden Gate Heights come with sensational views. For mid-century enthusiasts there are many two story Doelger-built homes, and the romantic at heart will be charmed by the 1930's period revival "storybook" row houses in the style of Rousseau.
