lofts and condos for sale in the central waterfront neighborhood of San Francisco.

Central Waterfront Real Estate

The expression “what’s old is new again,” is unquestionably apropos for San Francisco’s Central Waterfront district.  Historically the Central Waterfront, located south of Mission Bay between Potrero Hill and the San Francisco Bay, was a commercial and shipping hub dotted with factories, warehouses, and docks; and Dogpatch was a working-class residential neighborhood inhabited by industrial workers and craftsmen.  Today, Central Waterfront/Dogpatch retains much of the original industrial flavor, but is well on the way to becoming an affluent San Francisco district.

After WWII, the Central Waterfront experienced a general decline until the 1970s, when Esprit Company reintroduced light industry to the area.  In the 1990s, entrepreneurs and speculators saw potential in the district, and gentrification began with the renovation of existing Victorian era homes and the development of condos, lofts, and loft conversion projects.  Central Waterfront/Dogpatch is still a work in progress, but hip housing, pleasant weather, and a friendly community vibe with nearby cafes and restaurants, old style saloons and nightspots, and small neighborhood businesses are fast making it a popular place to live.

Central Waterfront Neighborhood Homes

Homes in Central Waterfront/Dogpatch are an interesting mix.  Having survived the ravages of the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires, Dogpatch boasts some of the oldest homes in San Francisco, including a baker’s dozen of quaint Victorian cottages designed by architect Jon Cotter Pelton Jr. in the 1880s.  Several warehouse conversions (Potrero Square Lofts and Homes on Esprit Park) have turned original brick and timber warehouse buildings into fashionable lofts, as well as some newer loft buildings that include the lofts at 1310 Minnesota Street and 2002 3rd Street.

Homes for sale in Central Waterfront / Dogpatch tend to be a bit less expensive than in many areas of San Francisco.  If you are in the market for an affordable home in a neighborhood full of charm and character, come take a look at what historic Dogpatch or the up-and-coming Central Waterfront have to offer.
