Bernal Heights is a somewhat quirky, family friendly community in San Francisco's District 9. With an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and urban dwellers, Bernal Heights has more the feel of a pleasantly eccentric village than a city-slicker neighborhood. Offbeat community traditions, which include the Illegal Soapbox Derby, an annual neighborhood garage sale, street fairs, and an outdoor cinema, assure that there is always something going on in Bernal Heights.
Bernal Heights is one of the last truly dog-friendly bastions in San Francisco. Bernal Heights Park features an off-leash dog park and offers more than 30 acres for romping and hiking, making it a center of outdoor recreation for residents – both the two-legged and four-legged kind. A hike to the top of Bernal Hill is rewarded with panoramic views looking out over Noe Valley, the downtown San Francisco skyline, and even farther afield to the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin County.
The coffee shops, restaurants, independent small shops, and trendy boutiques located along Courtland Avenue give Bernal Heights a comfortable bohemian air; while gardens and parks, including the recently renovated Holly Park and Precita Park, offer playgrounds, and picnic/play areas to neighborhood families. With services and recreation so readily available, there is little need to leave the neighborhood, but easy access to both I-280 and Highway 101 make commuting convenient for residents.
